Support the infrastructure that delivers millions of parcels and letters, every day. This Level 6 Degree Apprenticeship will give you the knowledge and skills to support our sorting centres as a Controls and Automation Engineer within the Engineering Design Team. On this 4-year programme, you’ll play an active role in researching, designing, testing, developing and implementing innovative technical projects across our systems. And as part of the team, you’ll be a driving force behind making our day-to-day operations possible.  

What you will be doing  

On an average day, we sort 26 million items. Getting each item where it needs to be is a complex, logistical challenge – one that we need our engineers to help solve. If you’re an aspiring engineering looking to specialise control/technical support, this Level 6 Degree Apprenticeship could be for you.   

The purpose of this roles is   

  • Play an active role within the engineering design team, supporting projects, innovations, technical studies, and process improvements as required 
  • Work collaboratively with Control Engineers to design control systems including electrical distribution equipment, HLC systems, PLC systems, AGV’s and supporting designs. 
  • Play an active role in electrical engineering and controls projects from tendering to commissioning stage 
  • Play an active role in the testing and modifying of existing equipment to drive performance, monitoring data, and creating effective action plans where required 
  • Contribute to the research, design, development, and implementation of new ways to automate existing systems and processes 
  • Produce work to customer requirements and or company standards in an effective manner 
  • Successfully incorporate an engineering apprenticeship with the aim of developing the technical skills necessary to become part of Engineering Design Team 
  • Work closely with operational customer specifications and other stakeholders to provide effective engineered solutions 
  • To assist in ensuring that Royal Mail Technical processes and systems are complied with at all times. 
  • To complete required technical reports utilising Royal Mail technical systems and processes 
  • To identify continuous improvement opportunities utilising Royal Mail technical systems and processes  

As part of your role, you will  

  • Working as part of the Engineering Design Team, play an active role in delivering project elements and assist delivery to time, cost, and quality. 
  • Analyse plant processes and operations to effectively input into engineering led design improvements. 
  • Effectively troubleshooting issues with hardware and software, input into effective performance improvements 
  • Analysing data and presenting findings in written reports 
  • Work collaboratively with design engineers, process engineers, procurement, and other internal stakeholders
  • Lead key project elements including liaising with clients, suppliers, contractors, and relevant authorities
  • Build knowledge and understanding of compliance to relevant health and safety regulations and quality standards
  • Develop knowledge and experience of writing computer software and test procedures
  • Develop knowledge and skill to produce engineering drawings to a high standard
  • Collaborate to development of new business proposals for design related projects
  • Perform day-to-day delivery of engineering tasks related to ongoing engineering design activities, improvement initiatives and automation projects whilst observing compliance and business standards.
  • Provide effective and efficient support to the Operational and Engineering maintenance team where required. 
  • Identify the root cause of automation performance and design issues and prioritize corrective actions to meet operational processing objectives in association with operational and engineering stakeholders, making full use of the relevant central support systems. 
  • Assist in the risk assessment process, and adhere to Engineering Safe Systems of Work, maintaining a safe working environment and tools for the job.
  • Be able to work on own initiative and as part of an active and collaborating team
  • Identify, raise, and lead Continuous Improvement opportunities 
  • Support high engineering standards including delivery of 5S within all Engineering areas 
  • Provide a pro-active and flexible approach to new equipment, systems, and ways of working. 
  • Develop personal knowledge, skills and abilities, channelling energy and commitment ensuring effective contribution to team performance.

We are looking for individuals who have a positive attitude, motivated, dependable, ethical, responsible and reliable. You don't need to be an expert engineer before you join, as we will support you all the way. What we expect you to have is a strong work ethic.  

If you like to structure plans and develop activities following a logical thought process and enjoy problem solving this could be the role for you. You will need good communication skills to be able to give and receive information accurately, and in a timely and positive manner. We are looking for team players who not only plays own part but able to work and communicate within a team. You will need willingness and commitment to learn.  

Your apprenticeship   

The programme will prepare you with advanced professional skills to help you excel in your career whilst providing the opportunity for you to practice these skills alongside our expert engineering team. You will receive mentorship and guidance from experienced professionals along the way.  

As an apprentice, you will be required to balance academic work, full-time employment, and on-the-job training. You will be expected to engage with teaching materials, online lectures, and in-person sessions. You will be provided with at least 6 hours a week of off the job training throughout this apprenticeship. 

This apprenticeship will equip you with skills crucial for engineering excellence. Through hands-on training, you'll master digital engineering, project management, control systems, and sustainable practices. This program fosters problem-solving, and technical proficiency in hydraulic pneumatics, instrumentation, and manufacturing processes. You'll develop expertise in maintenance management, bolstered by real-world projects. This apprenticeship empowers you to become a versatile and adept engineer capable of driving innovation, ensuring system integrity, and providing technical support within dynamic industries.

Starting Salary: £24,000  

Duration: 4 years 

Eligibility: Five GCSEs (or equivalent) including Maths, English and a Science, Technology or Engineering related subject, at grade C/4 or higher and 3 A Levels at BBB or above including a Mathematics based subject and a STEM based subject, or equivalent BTECs  

We have a number of roles located nationally with regular travel required to Swindon and offices within the UK. We also have roles based in our North West Super Hub and Midlands Super Hub where some travel to Swindon and offices within the UK will be required.
